16 Nov-7 Dec 2006. Top local and international musicians gather in the Mother City for the first edition of the Cape Town international summer music festival directed by Russian-born pianist Olga Kern. The programme includes Mischa Maisky playing Dvoraks cello concerto, Kern playing Tchaikovskys piano concerto No 1 and Benjamin Schmid playing Brahms violin concerto. Other highlights include the world premiere of Alfred Schnittkes oratorio Nagasaki with mezzo-soprano Hanneli Rupert as soloist, the world premiere of Allan Stephensons concerto for bassoon and guitar with soloists Todor Balkandjiev (bassoon) and James Grace (guitar), conducted by Stephenson, and the world premiere of South African composer Thomas Rajnas The Creation - A Negro Sermon.
