This work is the first opera by the composer Jake Heggie and the librettist Terence McNelly, based on the best-selling novel by Sister Helen Prejean, spiritual advisor to the convicted murderer of a teenage couple. It tells the true story of the deep and poignant interactions between a nun and a prisoner on death row and their complicated emotional journey of forgiveness, redemption and human anguish. The opera features classical, rock, jazz and Afro-American spirituals.
