Hazina - Traditions, Trade and Transitions in eastern Africa.

30 March2006-30 March 2007. Wooden sculptures, silver and beaded jewellery, circumcision masks and other artefacts on loan from the British Museum in London as well as material from the National Museums of Kenya. Hazina, which means "treasures" in Swahili, is organised under four main themes: trade, health and well-being, leadership and transitions in contemporary East African art. Exhibits come from Kenya, Uganda, southern Sudan, Ethiopia, Somalia, Tanzania, Mozambique and Burundi. The joint initiative between the National Museums of Kenya and the British Museum is part of a three-year British-government sponsored project to mark the links between Britain and Africa. It will be followed by a joint exhibition with the National Museum of Ethiopia for the Ethiopian millennium in 2007-2008, one in Mali on gold in west Africa and in Ghana on Asante funerary practices.
