10 April-10 May 2011. This exhibition entitled Here is Cairo brings together 50 paintings and drawings by the Egyptian artist Farid Fadel. Fadel portrays this crazy metropolis by piling up strata upon strata of her rich history, which was recently subverted by the events that followed the January revolution. On this occasion Fadel focuses on the many aspects that compose this multifaceted capital.
Fadel is particularly fascinated by evolution of the city of Cairo throughout the 19th century, characterized by its winding alleys, busy markets, coffee shops, towering minarets, mosques and churches and hidden corners. On display are also the preparatory drawings of old Cairo done by Fadel in 2009. A series of very recent imahes document the Tahrir revolution.
