iSystem, the first play by Anele Rusi, tackles the problem of police brutality and moral corruption.
The drama opens with a drugs raid in which an innocent bystander is killed. A policeman is accused of the murder and the inquest reveals the weaknesses in both the accused and the police system for which he works.
The playwright is an electrical engineer by training and initially started writing poetry at Cape Peninsula University of Technology. He then turned to drama when he heard about the Artscape Theatre’s New Writing programme to promote new work in English, Africaans and Xhosa. Rusi has worked closely with director Fatima Dike on the script and on the production, which she directs.
iSystem is part of the Artscape Theatre’s ninth spring drama season of new South African drama.
