Libya wins CHAN title in Cape Town

Libya takes home CHAN title

Libya’s Mediterranean Knights won the African Nations Championships (CHAN) in Cape Town in a 4-3 shootout in extra time against the favourites, Ghana’s Black Stars. Nigeria’s Super Eagles came third after a match against Zimbabwe’s Warriors.

The championships started on 11 January but produced few moments of excitement. The semi-final matches all went to extra time shootouts and caution seems to have been the policy of most of the 16 teams taking part. However Libya’s Mediterranean Knights managed to upset the confidence of Ghana Black Stars late in the game to bring home their first continental cup.

The 2014 championships in Cape Town were the third in the pan-African series. The previous winners were the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 2009 and Tunisia in 2011. The fourth edition of the tournament will be held in Rwanda in 2016.
