Listro and Kure-Yalew

The showing of the brief documentaries Supporting Spaces by Bisrat Kifle and Recycling Spaces by Felix Heisel are followed by an open discussion on the themes of the role of listros (shoe shiners) and street vendors in Addis and the informal system of recycling in the markets.

Kure-Yalews collect unwanted objects from neighbourhood households, transport them to the Minalesh Terra at the Merkato to be transformed into other goods which are then sold back to neighbourhood shops for resale as “new” items. The spaces used for this informal system of recycling are now under threat from the city’s urban redevelopment plans.

The event is part of the series Changing Addis organised by the Alliance Ethio-Française and the European Institute of Architecture, Building Construction and City Development (EIABC).
