Maboneng Township Arts Experience

Art in private homes and public spaces in Gugulethu township. The two-day cultural event includes films, visual arts, dance, theatre and music. This year it coincides with the first Cape Town Arts Fair which is organised in conjunction with the Fiera di Milano.

The Maboneng Township Arts Experience is part of a nationwide project to make townships a centre of the creative arts and to end their negative image. Each year there are two open days in three townships around the country. The festival in Gugulethu follows the one in Johannesburg's Alexandra township in September and the one in Mabneng, KwaZulu Natal in December.

In the decade since it started Maboneng Township Arts Experience has presented 50 artists in 70 different home-galleries. It has now been chosen as part of the official Cape Town's World Design 2014 programme.

On 26 and 27 Oct there is a return shuttle bus service between Lookout, V&A Waterfront (departing every hour from 11.00-16.00) and Gugulethu (departing every hour from 11.30-16.30) and there are guides to take people to the various events in the township.
