The South African Ntsoana dance company performs Afrika, after its 10-day residency with a Pamoja arts residency programme in Maputo.
Sello Pesa, the artistic director and choreographer of the Johannesburg-based urban dance collective, Humphrey Maleka and Brian Mtembu explore what it means to be African, to belong to a certain region or country and the resulting stereotypes, intolerance, violence and xenophobia.
Last October Pesa and Maleka spent 10 days in Maputo at the Casa da Cultura do Alto Maé on a Pro Helvetia Swiss Arts Council residency before the presentation of their work After Tears.
Of particular interest to the collective is what happens to traditional rituals (such as death and mourning in the case of After Tears) when communities move from a rural to an urban environment.
The performance is at Centro Cultural Franco Mocambicano.
