This exhibition features work by four painters and a sculptor - Catherine Ochulla, Maricel Albertyn, Lionel Smit, Varenke Paschke and Jonathan Munnik - who consider the body as a site of social and emotional politics. Today mass communication imposes the perfect body as a collective physical goal, achievable through the purchase of a particular product or brand of clothing. However, the artists believe that real beauty lies in subtle deviations from the physical ideal rather than in the ideal itself. This exhibition shifts attention away from perfection and onto differences, individual peculiarities or nuances as the source of physical beauty as well as of potential psychological trauma.
