22 Feb. For the series of African film screening, Goethe Institut hosts the projection of Soul Boy, moderated by the filmmaker Zelalem Woldemariam and followed by a public discussion.
Set in Nairobi, Kenya, it tells the story of the 14 year-old Abila, who lives with his parents in Kibera, one of the largest slums in East Africa. One morning Abila discovers that his father is ill. The delirious father mumbles that someone has stolen his soul and Abila feels shocked, confused and helpless, but decides to search for a suitable cure. Supported by his friend Shiku, the teenager finds that his father has gambled his soul away in the company of a spirit woman. Abila wants to face the witch and finds her in the darkest corner of the ghetto. She gives him seven challenging tasks to save his father’s lost soul.
