Race for the Cure in Dar es Salaam

In Dar es Salaam the Susan G Komen Race for the Cure to promote awareness of breast cancer is a 5-km walk that starts and ends at Ocean Road Cancer Institute Grounds. The walk starts at 07.30.

The Ocean Road institute is the only one specialising in cancer care in the country.

The walk is organised by the Tanzania Breast Cancer Foundation, which promotes education about breast cancer in schools, advice and counselling, as well as hospital and home visits for patients. It also organises palliative care and provides financial help for those who cannot afford the high cost of treatment.

It is estimated that one in eight women in Tanzania develops breast cancer. Cases are often diagnosed late in the illness and many women hesitate to go for treatment because of the high costs.

In July Komen’s founder and chair of global strategy, Nancy G. Brinker, visited Tanzania from the United States to encourage the continuing fight against breast cancer.
