16-17 Sept 2006. The sixth annual penguin festival in the old naval town south of Cape Town this year pays tribute to Oscar-winning South African films as well as to French filmmaker Luc Jacquets March of the Penguins, which won the 2006 Oscar award for best documentary feature. Most events take place in the town centre, with a central arena hosting a craft market, children's activities, food stalls, an environmental and conservation marquee and an entertainment marquee. For sporting enthusiasts there is a five-kilometre fun run/walk/waddle, the Penguin Classic Golf Challenge and a petanque tournament among others. Simons Towns Boulders Beach is home to one of the largest colonies of African penguins in the world. The area is part of a conservation zone and is a popular tourist site. Funds raised during the festival will be used to support the South African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB) and its work to protect the African penguin.
