The flight into Egypt is a biblical event described in the Gospel of Matthew (Matthew 2:13-23), in which Joseph fled to Egypt with his wife Mary and infant son Jesus. When King Herod of Galilee finds out about the birth of the King of the Jews, he is terrified that Jesus might threaten his throne. So Herod initiates the Massacre of Innocents in the Jerusalem area willing to kill the small Jesus. But an angel appears to Joseph and warns him to escape with his wife and son to Egypt, which is located outside the dominions of King Herod.
