15-17 Feb 2008. The Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra (SJMO), the orchestra in-residence at the National Museum of American History in Washington, DC, gives two performances during its first-ever visit to Egypt. The first is on 15 Feb at 14.00 at the venue for the sound and light show at the Giza pyramids. The second is on 17 Feb at 20.00 in the Cairo Opera House grounds, Zamalek. Founded in 1990 and directed by composer, conductor and performer David Baker, the 17-piece SJMO preserves and promotes the jazz legacy in American culture with performances, workshops and other educational programmes.
