VIP Marathon.

14 October 2009. The fifth annual VIP Marathon, organised by The Arusha Track and Field Club, will take place on 14 October. The event is being held in memory of Julius Kambarage Nyerere, who served as prime minister and then as president of Tanzania from just before the country's independence in 1961 until he retired in 1985. Starting from the Impala Hotel and finishing at Ngurdoto Mountain Lodge, the 20 km marathon will see seasoned athletes such as Christopher Isegwe, Dr Makando, Fabian Joseph, Francis and Samson Ramadhani partake in an event organisers say stands for maintaining peace and harmony. Also included is a 5 km children's walk which starts at Usa River Police Station and finishes at Ngurdoto Mountain Lodge. 14 October is Nyerere day and a public holiday in Tanzania.
