The Winter Concert Season inaugurates at the city hall with some masterpieces by Tchaikovsky and Saint-Saens under the artistic direction of Brandon Phillips, resident conductor of the Cape Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, performed by the pianist Leslie Howard and the organist Grant Braesler. Phillips was awarded the first Len van Zyl Conductors’ Competition in 2010, which allowed him to travel to the USA and take part to an internship at the Philadelphia Orchestra. He is currently the principal bassoonist in the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra and regularly conducts the CPO’s outreach concerts. Howards has worked with some of the world’s finest orchestras and international artists. Braesler started playing organ at the age of 14 with Garmon Ashby and later continued studying music at the University of Cape Town. He currently works as a part-time organ lecturer at UCT as in organist and master of choristers at St George’s Cathedral.
